Anne Crawley (1st daughter), born 4 August 1785 at Whitestone; married 21 April 1806, her 1st cousin, Rev. John Lloyed Crawley (Boevey), born 1775, died 1850, record of Heyford, Northants, 2nd son of Sir T. Crawley-Boevey; died 2 January 1865 and was buried at Heyford. She had eight sons and three daughters and numerous descendants of hers are still living.

Classics School and B.A. 1811; married 14 May 1825 Eliza Catherine, daughter of Abraham Grimes (for which family see the book Antony & Dorothea Gibbs by J.A. Gibbs, p. 377 n6); died 30 September 1871 at his house (now called Lawn Upton and (1931) in the ownership of Lord Wraxall of Chart XVIII) in Littlemore, Oxon, and was buried at Littlemore. He was in Antony Gibbs & Sons 1814-46, and a partner 1820-38 (in Spain for them 1818-19, in Chile and Peru for them 1828-33). A director of the London Assurance Corporation, 1842-65. A member of the Club 'Nobody's Friends' 1813-71. Alternate patron with Oriel College, Oxford, of the living of Littlemore, to the church of which (built in 1835 by his friend, Rev. John H. The eldest child of his only child, Charles Edward, was William Scott Crawley of Charlbury, Oxon. (b. 1858).

Charles married Eliza Katherine Grimes on 14 May 1825 in Churchover, Warwickshire. Eliza (daughter of Abraham Grimes and Mary Cholmley) was born on 4 Jan 1795 in Coton House, Churchover, Warwickshire; died on 11 Nov 1881 in Littlemore, Oxfordshire. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Elizabeth (4th daughter), born at Stowe 29 July 1791; died 3 January 1884; married 24 September 1811 Rev. George William Daubeny (1784-1860), for whose family see 'Antony & Dorothea Gibbs' by J.A. Gibbs, pp. 254 and n, and 446, and Burke's 'Landed Gentry' under Daubeny of Cote. She had six sons and three daughters, and numerous descendants of hers are living.

Elizabeth married Rev. George William Daubeny on 23 Sep 1811 in Whissendine, Rutland. George (son of Rev. Charles Daubeny and Elizabeth Barnston) was born on 16 Nov 1784 in Seend House, Seend, Wiltshire; died on 5 Jun 1860 in Seend Green House, Wiltshire. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Caroline sold the lease of 11 Bedford Square in 1849 and resided at Aldenham House 1846-50. In 1843-6 she built at Clifton Hampden, where her brother in law Joseph Gibbs was Perpetual Curate, a new parsonage to take the place of the old one which Anne Noyes gave in 1832. By a re-exchange in 1905 the former is now the Manor House and the latter has since been demolised.

She also completely restored the church of St. Michael of All Angels there, mainly with money set aside by her husband when he inherited the property, but with contributions added by herself, and her son Henry. G Gilbert Scott was her architect in both cases. The Living was augmented under her Will. See article on Clifton Hampden in the book 'Antony & Dorothea Gibbs' by J.A. Gibbs pp. 447-50. Caroline was buried at Clifton Hampden. Monumental Inscription in church and church yard there and in Aldenham church. Her Will was printed on 16 July 1950 at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, Doctors Commons, London.

George (son of Antony Gibbs and Dorothea Barnetta Hucks) was born on 24 Aug 1785 in Exeter, Devon; died on 21 Aug 1842 in Venice, Venezia, Veneto, Italy; was buried on 27 Dec 1842 in Clifton Hampden, Oxfordshire. George Abraham Crawley (2nd son), born at Stowe aforesaid 26 September 1795; educated at Rugby School (entered 1808); married 29 September 1826 Caroline, daughter of David Powell (for whose family see 'Antony & Dorothea Gibbs' by J.A. Gibbs p. 377, n6); died at Ambleside 24th and was buried 31 July 1862 in Highgate Cemetry. He was articled in 1812 to Jones & Green, solicitors in London, admitted solicitor 1817, afterwards partner in Pemberton Crawley & Gardener, London, later Crawley Arnold & Co. Marshal to Chief Justice Sir Vicary Gibbs 1815. Many years legal adviser to teh National Society and Treasurer to the Additional Curates Fund. Member 1819-62, Secretary 1833-62, of 'Nobody's Friends'. A spcial memoir of him by G.E.Cokayne is in the book, 'Nobody's Friends' (privileged printed 1885). His home from 1839 onwards was Fitzroy Farm, Highgate, which he built. By his two married sons and four married daughters he has numerous descendants, and one of his grandsons, Canon A. Stafford Crawley, married Anstice Katharine, grand-daughter of William and Matilda Blanche Gibbs, above mentioned.

George married Caroline Powell on 29 Sep 1826 in Loughton, Essex. Caroline was born on 2 Mar 1804 in Bloomsbury, London; died on 17 Dec 1875 in Highgate, London. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In 1857 Charles Edward was married firstly to Maria Walter Scott Wilson and there were two children from that marriage: Charles William Scott Crawley (1858-1938) and Margaret Laura Scott Crawley (1860-1938). Maria died in April 1862 and was buried in the Crawley family plot at St. Mary and St. Nicholas Church in Littlemore.

On April 23, 1867 in Abingdon, Berkshire, he married secondly, Mary Ann (Marion) Karop, daughter of George Charles Karop and Mary Ann. She had been the governess to his two children during the illness of his first wife.

Charles and his two children are living with his mother-in-law and her already large household (including 8 servants). Maria does not appear in the census, though she is still alive. The staff includes two nurses so perhaps she is already very ill. The census taker has clearly been confused by the complex relationships and has mistakenly included Sophia and Matilda with the Crawley family, but they are actually Wilson family members.

When the census was conducted on April 2, Charles and Marion were living at 2 Elliot Hill in Lewisham awaiting the birth of their first child, Edward Robert John (Jack) who would be born a few months later on July 25. Also living in the house were Charles' children from his first marriage, Charles (age 13) and Margaret (age 10).

1881 Census: 4 Kensington Hall Terrace, Fulham, London (no longer exists) the family has moved to Fulham. Charles and Marion's second son George (known as Eric) is now 7 years old. Charles Edward and Margaret are both away at the time of the census, and appear as visitors elsewhere.

Henry Hucks Gibbs of Aldenham and Clifton Hampden. 1st Baron Aldenham (1896). Born at 2 Powis Place, Bloomsbury, Holborn, 31 August and baptised at Stowe-Nine-Churches, 4 October 1819. Educated Rugby 1832-6, matric. at Oxford (Exeter College) 16 February 1837; 3rd Class Classics and BA. 1841. M.A. 1844. Died aged 88 at Aldenham House 13 September and was buried 18 September 1907 at Aldenham. Will was dated 16 (cod. 28) 1906, proved 20 December 1907. Monument in Clifton Hampden churchyard.

Before Rugby he was at Redland, nr. Bristol. On his father's death he succeeded to the estates in and about Clifton Hampden and on his mother's to those in and about Aldenham. He made various changes in them by sales and purchases (see 'Antony & Dorothea Gibbs' by J.A. Gibbs), pp. 45-6). Lord of the Manor of Burston (Herts), sometime of that of North Moreton (Berks), and till 1902 of that of Clifton Hampden, which estate (and at that time about 1340 ac. nearly all of Oxon.) he then transferred to his son Alban, and, by purchase in 1877, patron of Aldenham. He augmented, 1901-5, the living of Clifton Hampden by restoring to it the Parsonage of 1832-46 and buying the overlarge one of 1846 for his son Alban's Manor House and he built there the beautiful brick bridge over the Thames in 1864 (designer Gilbert Scott), The Coppice house and the Village Hall. He made extensive alterations in Aldenham House and laid out the famous gardens there, his son Vicary helping largely in developing them. He restored and reseated Aldenham Church, 1882 (architect Sir A. Blomfield) and gave a new choir screen in 1903. In St. Alban's Abbey he restored the High Altar Screen 1884-9 (sculpted by H. Hems), gave the reredos with sculpture representing the Resurrection by Sir Alfred Gilbert and reconstructed the organ. He contributed to the building and endowing of Christ Church, Radlett, 1864, erected sundry buildings and cottages in Aldenham and Elstree, and diverted the public road on the west of Aldenham House.

He was entered at Lincoln's Inn Jan. 1840: Joined Antony Gibbs & Sons in the City of London 1843; a manager thereof 1847; partner 1848; head 1875-1907. Under him the Firm closed their Peru Branch in 1880 (at the time of the Peru-Chile War) and concentrated in Chile, and the next year took over Gibbs Bright and Co. with their English & Australasian Branches, and West Indian business. A director of the Bank of England 1853-1901 (Governor 1875-7). A director of the Mexican Railway Co. 1864-1905; of the Indemnity Mutual Marine Assurance Co. 1869-1906; and sometime of the Colne Valley Co., and of other companies. Member of Lloyds 1855. President of the London Institution in the City of London 1888-94. President of the Bimetallic League from 1881 and of the City of London Conservative Association 1881-1907. Served on Royal Commissions on the Stock Exchange 1877-8, on the City Parochial Charities 1880, on the Depression of trade 1885-6. He and other members of the family founded the London St. James Gazette (Conservative paper) in 1880 and owned it till 1888. Member of Parliament (Conservative) for the City of London 18 April 1891-July 92 when he retired. A commissioner of Lieutenancy for the City of London. Member of the English Church Union from 1862 (a Trustee 1876-1907), on the Council 1886-1907) and vice-pres. of the Herts (West) Branch 1897-1907. On the Council of Keble College, Oxford, 1873-1907. Member of the House of Laymen of Canterbury Convocation 1887-1907 and treasurer sometime to 1907. A Life Member from 1888 of the Corporation of the Church House, Westminster. Governor of Aldenham Grammar School 1881-1907. A Justice of the Peace for Herts. and Middlesex. High Sheriff of Herts. 1884. A Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery 1891-1907. Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society 1859 and of the Society of Antiquaries 1885 (sometime on its Council). President of Guy's Hospital 1880-96.

Among his books he had the best collection of copies of the 'Book of Common Prayer' in English hands. Author of catologues of his own books and MSS (printed 1876, 1888 and 1890 with supplements to the last 2 in 1898 - all since revised in a new catalogue, see his son Alban): 'Pedigree of the family of Gibbs' with historical introduction, 1st edn. 1890, 2nd edn. 1904: 'The Game of Ombre' 1st edn. 1874, 2nd 1878, 3rd for Roxburghe Club 1902; 'Account of the High Altar Screen in the Cathedral of St. Alban's' 1890: 'A Colloquy on Currency' (Contemp. Review 1889, 2nd edn. separate 1893, 3rd 1894, 4th 1899): various pamphlets on the currency and bimetallism from 1876, including 'The Double Standard' (1881) of which a French edn. 'Le Double Etalon' was published by the Belgian Bimet. Association 1883. Minutes of his evidence before the 'Indian Currency Committee', 1899, are printed in Appendix to their Report. Editor, 1868, of 'The Romance of the Chevalere Assigne' for the Early Eng. Text Soc.; and, for the Roxburghe Club, the 'Life and Martyrdom of St. Katherine of Alexandra, 1884 and the 'Hystorie of the most noble knight Plasidas' 1873. To the latter club he contributed 'The Royal History of the Knight Generides' 1865. He was a member of the Philological Society from 1859 and assisted in the production of the 'New Oxford English Dict. (pub. 1888-1928) edr. Murray and others) from 1857 to 1907, subedited the greater part of letter C and was one of the sub-editors of K (see Prefaces to Vols. I, II, V, and VI, Pt.2).

Member of the Club 'Nobody's Friends' from 1851 (president 1895-1907); of the Roxburghe Club 1863-1907) (treasurer 1878-92, vice pres. 1892-1903, pres. 1903-7); of the Carlton and Athenaeum Clubs.

He lost his right hand September 1864 from a gun accident at Mamhead, Devon, (rented for a season by his uncle William).

He resided at Frognal, Hampstead, 1849-56 (a house with 18 acres, since destroyed, in the North Angle of Finchley Road and Frognal Lane); at St. Dunstan's in Regent's Park, St. Marylebone 1856-1907 (then the Blinded Soldiers and Sailors Home). Aldenham House, which passed to him on his Mother's Death, was let till 1868 but occupied by him 1868-1907.

His Life is in the 'Dictionary of National Biography' Vol II of 2nd supplement, but there are a few mistakes in it some of which are corrected in 'Errata' printed in Vol. III of the supplment. Louisa (daughter of Dr William Adams, LLD and Mary Anne Cokayne) was born on 10 Sep 1818 in Southampton Row, Holborn, London; died on 17 Apr 1897 in St. Dunstan's, Regent's Park, London; was buried on 21 Apr 1897 in Aldenham, Hertfordshire. Baptised privately there and received into the Church 12 April 1823 at St. George's, Hart Street, Holborn. Educated at Charterhouse, London, 1838-9, matric. at Oxford (Fellow Commoner of Worcester College) 18 October 1847, B.A. 1851. Died childless at Cheltenham 1st and was buried at Clifton Hampden, 8 December 1856. Will proved December 1856.

In Antony Gibbs and Sons, London, 1839-41 and 1844-7. In the interval, a year with Feldman Bohl and Co., merchants in Hamburg. After taking his Oxford degree, he was in 1852 a student at Wells Theological College. Merry Hill was bought by him from his mother's exors. At his death his brother Henry bought it and in 1878 sold it out of the family. His diaries 1841-2 (2 vols) and 1851-2 are in possession of J.A. Gibbs. (The ownership of these diaries and the possession of other items mentioned in these Notes, refer to the known locations in 1932, current whereabouts are uncertain).

To add to the facts about education, he went to a school at Brighton about six or seven, and then to one at Clifton, Bristol. After Charterhouse he was, 1848-9, with a tutor, the rector of Poundstock, Cornwall. Joined Antony Gibbs & Sons, London, 1854, but left them 1856 through ill-health, and in every year 1851 to 58 he travelled much abroad, particularly in Spain, and (1857-8) up the Nile and in Palestine. A student at Wells Theological College 1858. Ordained Deacon (Exeter) 1859, Priest 1860. Curate at St. Mary's, Torwood, Torquay, to Rev. J. Hogg 1859-1860, when his health drove him abroad again (Pyrenees) with his wife and first-born. Living at Bradeham, Bucks., 1863-4. Perpetual Curate of Clifton Hampden, Oxon., 1864 (presented by his brother Henry Hucks Gibbs), but resigned work in 1874 from the same cause as before. His parsonage there was what is now the Manor House. Resided at Oaklands, Cleveland, Somerset, 1874-8. Vicar of Exwick, Devon, 1878-85; Rector of Clyst St. George, Devon 1885-97 (presented to both by Antony Gibbs). Retired and resided at Speen House, Berks., 1898-1914. Editor of 'The Registers of Clyst St. George', published 1899 by The Parish Register Society. Member of the Athenauem Club, London, 1863-86. His diaries 1851-1912 (52 vols.), last in possession of John Arthur Gibbs in 1932 are now missing. The volume of his 'Reminiscences' (MS.) from c.1840 to 1910, now in the possession of Denis D. Gibbs.

He succeeded to the estate of Clifton Hampden (Oxon. & Berks) and to the lordship of the manor of Clifton Hampden by gift from his father in 1902. The Vicarage there became his Manor House in 1905 & he enlarged it. He built new cottages in Clifton Hampden and added to his lands, which in 1927 consisted of the whole of Clifton Hampden & extended into Burcot, Toot Baldon, Dorchester, and Long Wittenham, in all about 1780 ac. On his father's death in 1907 the life tenancy of the Aldenham estates passed to him, comprising at that date 3,060 ac. in Herts and 106 in Middlesex. Patron of the Livings of Aldenham (from 1907) and Clifton Hampden (from 1905).

He entered Antony Gibbs & Sons 1870, partner from 1873, head from 1907. During his headship the firm opened a Branch in N. York (1913). Visited Australia 1881-2 when the firm entered into business there. Director of the Guardian Assurance Co. from 1871; the Universal Marine Insce. Co. 1875-87; the Bank of Australasia from 1887; and director of other public Cos. In the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths (livery 1897, assistant 1900, prime warden 1908-9) and also in the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers (master).

Contested Abingdon for Parliament 1880. Followed his father as M.P. (Conservative) for the City of London, 8 July 1892. In 1904 he and his brother Vicary vacated their seats (under an Act of George III) owing to the fact that as partners in A. Gibbs & Sons they had contracted with our Government to sell them Chilean Warships. He was at once re-elected by the City. Elected again by the City in 1906 for the new Parliament, he retired in favour of the Right Hon. Arthur Alfour (ex-premier). President of the London Institution 1906-13. Fellow of the Royal Colonial Institute. President of the City of London Conservative Association from 1908. Commissioner of Lieutenancy for the City of London from 1892: Commissioner of income and land tax for the same from 1892. A Governor of Aldenham School of income and land tax for the same from 1892. A Governor of Aldenham school 1907-13. Sometime Treasurer of the National Society and later Treasurer of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, the Royal School for Deaf and Dumb children at Margate, the Colonial Bishoprics' Fund, and the Additional Curates Society.

As a Freemason, was Grand Warden of England in Craft Masonry, Deputy Grand Mark Master of English, and the Provincial Grand Mark Master of Kent. Member of the Roxburgh Club (vice-president 1911, president in succession to Lord Rosebery from 1929) to which he contributed the 'Life of St. Katherine' edited by his father (1884), and (in 1908) by his father's wishes 'The Mirrour of the Lyf. of Jesu Christ'. Member of the Club 'Nobody's Friends', from 1875 (president from 1913). Among other Clubs, sometime member of the Athenaeum, the Carlton, the City Carlton from 1891 (Chairman 1908-26, President from 1930, Trustee for the Club and its Debenture holders over many years), the City of London from 1869 (Chairman 1891-4; Trustee from 1907). Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.

He printed, 1914, 'Catalogue of the Aldenham Library' by Helen Budd, being a revision of the catalogues printed by his father. Editor of a booklet of 'Extracts from the diary of G.H. Gibbs' being a reprint from the Gt. Western Railway Magazine of 1909-10.

Goddards was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1898-9 for Sir Frederick Mirrilees. The house was intended for Sir Frederick's daughter Cecilia (afterwards Mrs Craven) and until she needed it, it was used as a rest home for nurses.

St Cecilia's badge is carved outside the front entrance. After the house was enlarged in 1910 it was occupied for a short time by Sir Frederick's son, Donald Mirrilees and his wife. Mrs. Craven never lived there. It is a fine example of the relationship between house and garden which was of paramount importance to Lutyens (see Edwin Lutyens Architectural Monographs 6, Academy Editions, London, 1979). The garden was designed by Gertrude Jekyll and is mentioned in 'Gardens Old and New' edited by H. Avray Tipping, MA, FSA, Vol. III (pub. about 1912 by Country Life). Distinct reservations on its architectural merits are expressed by Pevsner in the vol. on Surrey in the 'Buildings of England' Series, pub. by Penguin Books, 1st edition 1962, 2nd edition. 1971, however it is the subject of one of the books in Brian Edwards' "Architecture in Detail" series (Goddards, Lutyens by Brian Edwards published by Phaidon Press Ltd 1996).

3rd son of Canon Reginald Gibbs, MA. Baptised at Clifton Hampden 19 November 1905. Educated at Lancing College (Foundation Scholar) 1919-24 and at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, 1924-26. Army Staff College, Camberley, 1939.

Captain of the School at Lancing and in the school Athletic Team in 1923 and 1924. At Sandhurst in the 1st Association football team; a junior under officer there; passed out 6th. Gazetted to The Queen's Royal Regiment February 1926 and joined 2nd Battalion in Allahabad, India, in March the same year, returning to UK via Sudan with his Regiment in 1928. Adjutant, Regimental Depot 1930. In 1934-35 at London University and in Italy studying Italian under War Office auspices, prior to becoming an Italian military Interpreter. A/Staff Captain 9 Inf. Bde., Portsmouth, 1936. Promoted Captain 1937 and appointed Adjutant 2nd Bn. Queen's Royal Regt. in Isle of Wight. Nominated to vacancy at Staff College, Camberley, January 1939.
Following outbreak of war in Sept. 1939 was appointed, in November, Staff Captain (A) G.H.Q. BEF France. In February 1940 Brigade Major 144 Inf. Bde. in 48 Divn. and in May, on the German invasion of Holland and Belgium, moved up with the Bde. to outskirts of Waterloo. Took part in the Retreat to Dunkirk and evacuated from Dunkirk beaches on 1st June 1940. (Mentioned in Despatches). 1940-41 on Staff at H.Q. 10 Corps, Catterick, and at H.Q. Eastern Comd. Luton Hoo. March 1942 appointed to command 1/6 Queen's Royal Regiment, serving in Egypt in 8th Army and taking part in battles of Bir el Munassib, Adam Haifa and El Alamein. Whilst serving in Egypt was mentioned in Despatches and awarded the DSO.
Captured in the Desert in October 1942 and taken by air to Italy. Held in various POW camps 1942-43, from Bari to near Cremona in the valley of the river Po, from whence he escaped from Campo PG49 at Fontanellato in Sept. 1943. Trekked 600 miles down the Apennines before reaching Allied Lines near Naples in November 1943. Details of the escape are recorded in a book, privately published, Apennine Journey, Diary of Travels across Italy after escaping from P.O.W. Camp.

November 1943-Feb. 1944 sick leave in U.K. June 10 1944 ordered to Normandy Beach Head to take over command of 2nd Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, whose C.O. had been killed in the Normandy landings 3 days earlier. Remained in command throughout operations in France, Belgium and Holland up to the Rhine in Germany. Awarded Bar to D.S.O. for action whilst under command of II Armd. Divn. near Falaise.

March 1945 appointed GSO I Liaison 24 Army Gp. and subsequently returned to U.K. to command 166 Inf. Officer Cadet Unit in Isle of Man. Oct. 1945 in command Basic O.C.T.U. Aldershot to reform it into the Mons Officer Cadet School; appointed Acting Colonel. 1946 in command 1st Bn. of his own Regiment, The Queen's Royal Regt. in Malaya. 1948 Commandant Eaton Hall Officer Cadet School, Chester. 1950 retired, remaining on Regular Army Reserve of Officers, with mobilization appointment in rank of full Colonel.

When commanding 1/6 Queen's Royal Regiment with the 8th Army and taking part in the battles of Bir el Munassib, Adam Halfa and El Alamein, he was awarded his first DSO. He was captured in the desert but escaped from prison camp. The story of his escape is told in his privately published book, Apennine Journey. Following his escape he was ordered to Normandy to command 2nd Battalion of the Warwickshire Regiment whose CO had been killed in the Normandy landings three days earlier. He retained this command for the rest of the war and won his second DSO.
The citation states:
"On August 6th 1944 Lieut-Colonel Gibbs' battalion withstood a heavy and determined attack at le Bas Perrier from enemy infantry and Tiger tanks, preceded by intense artillery and mortar covering fire. One company area was overrun by tanks, which penetrated the battalion position. The action lasted from early afternoon till dusk, and the fire of enemy tanks dominated the battalion area the whole time, from the high ground above. Throughout this confused action, in which the battalion suffered heavy casualties, Lieut-Col. Gibbs had the situation well in hand. His calm, imperturbable behaviour was an inspiration to his junior leaders and soldiers. His clear orders, determination and complete disregard for his own safety under these very difficult circumstances had a most marked effect upon the course of the battle, and its successful outcome is a shining example of what the personality of a courageous leader can achieve."

At his funeral service on 4th May 1984 the address was given by Major General Sir Philip Ward. Here is what he said:

Once in a lifetime - maybe twice - if you have eyes to see - you will behold a man who you will recognise as one who is especially good, especially dear, in fact uniquely special. And if you have ears to hear you will reconise in him a voice that speaks the truth. In my lifetime, and I guess in the lifetime of most of you here this afternoon, Denis Gibbs was such a man. His influence on us all was far reaching, profound and wholly benign.

I originally met Denis on 1st January 1950 when I was appointed to my first job outside my regiment to be his Adjutant, when he was Commandant of Eaton Hall Officer Cadet School. My predecessor, like me, a Welsh Guardsman of tender years, in handing Denis over to me said - rather anxiously - "don't worry if at times he seems a little fierce; he tends occasionally to gnash his teeth and storm about, but if you stand your ground he turns out to be the kindest man on earth and you will get to love him". He also told me that Denis was given to writing little notes on very small pieces of paper, none of which were decipherable, but that it didn't matter because he always followed them up with verbal confirmation that left no room for misunderstanding. Well - he did storm about a bit and gnash his teeth, (seldom I'm happy to say at me), but his gnashes expired as quickly as they had begun, and ended with the object of his wrath being bought a reviving drink to settle things.

As to the writing, that too proved to be a correct warning, but it has become a source of intellectual delight far exceeding the solution of crossword puzzles, in all the time of friendship and correspondence that has ensued throughout the last four and thirty years. The trick, we found, was to open one of his letters at breakfast time and lie it flat on a convenient table or desk and let it get used to its new surroundings. We would then visit it during the day taking it, as it were, by surprise, and from a distance dart in and out, making out its meaning, bit by bit.

From these early days my alarm had changed to respect, from respect to affection and from affection to admiration and love. Denis Lucius Alban Gibbs was the third son and child of the five children of Canon Reginald Gibbs and his wife Lucia of Clifton Hampden in the county of Oxfordshire and was born in 1905. His brother Tom and his sister Joan survive him and they are here with us today. It was within this truly remarkable family that Denis received his grounding in the Christian Faith. He was carved into it, granite strong, and it was a faith that never left him. By it he was inspired, with it he inspired other people. It was the first of five foundation stones upon which his life was built.

The second foundation stone, chronologically, was his Regiment and the Army. He went to Sandhurst in the year that I was born, and was commissioned after an oustanding two years as a Gentleman Cadet into The Queen's Royal Regiment in 1926. he was lucky enough to serve in India and in the Sudan before such service was eclipsed by the aftermath of the Second World War. In those years before 1939 he became immersed in the art and ethos of regimental soldiery, honed and tempered for the most difficult of all levels of command - in his case that of Battalion Commander. But first, at the outbreak of war he was appointed Brigade major of 144 Infantry Brigade serving in France. He was Mentioned in despatches for his part in the evacuation from Dunkirk.

Then, in 1942, he was given command of 1/6 Battalion of his own Regiment, leading them at the battles of Alam Halfa and El Alamein. Here again he was Mentioned in Despatches and was awarded his first D.S.O.
Fate ordained that he should be captured in the desert, but fate also ordained that he should escape from his prison camp, and more of that in a moment. Meanwhile, after his return to this country, and a short spell of sick leave, he was ordered to Normandy to take over the 2nd Battalion of The Warwickshire Regiment whose Commanding Officer had been killed in the Normandy landings three days earlier. He remained in command throughout the rest of the war and received his second D.S.O. What a record: what a man.

The story of his escape from prison camp near Cremona in Italy is recorded in a slim, privately printed book, written by Denis, and called Apennine Journey, and is in itself a small classic of fortitude and resolution. Many of you will have read it, and in it you will have detected that self-effacing modesty and that concern for the people who helped him make good his escape, so typical of Denis. For all who understood soldiery, and for all who saw him at work right up until the time of his retirement in 1950, Denis was the Quintessential regimental officer: proud of his Sovereign and the Country which his regiment served: proud of the men he led.

In 1933, after seven years with his Regiment, another foundation stone, but of a very special kind, was laid, namely his marriage to Hilaria Edgcumbe. Here, if ever, was a marriage made in Heaven. The combined ingredients of love and their contrasting characteristics: the details of administration for him; the carefree serenity from her. Their combined interest in, compassion for and care of each other and of other people combined to make a marriage that was at once efficient and effective, and at the same time one that was as romantic at its end as it was at its beginning. So happy are we that they and all of us were able to share in the Golden Wedding celebrations last year.

Two more foundation stones. First the family. Four daughters, eleven grandchildren. Such a source of pride and happiness. Such special people as you would expect from such a parentage. Colourful, diverse in character,adventurous, individualistic, original, loving - sometimes presenting Denis with conundrums to be shared and solved, with advice to be sought and given, all activities which, though like all fathers doubtless sometimes driven wild by them, Denis relished to the full, and without which he would have felt a little cheated.

I come now to the last foundation stone: his Church: one allied so closely to the first of those which I suggested, his Faith. He was churchwarden and a member of the Parochial Church Council at Bickleigh, amongst his flowers and fruit whilst at Roborough, from 1951 to 1963. And of this church, here at Tavistock, a member of the Parochial Church Council from 1965 to his death. He was a most regular attender at all services of the Church's year deriving strength and comfort in such a quiet and modest way. If he was here (ie at Tavistock), or staying away, he never missed an Office if he could help it, and he epitomised what it is that the Church needs so desperately, if it is to survive and grow, namely the active participation of the Laity.

Faith and Family: Regiment, Queen and Country, The Church. These were Denis' talismen. By them he steered: by them he was formed into the man we knew. I have tried to hold before your eyes a looking glass. In it I hope you have seen a Denis whom you recognise. But be assured of this. We shall not see his like again, this side of Paradise.

The man who ran Dougarie Estate for the last 35 years has passed away. Stephen Gibbs OBE died peacefully at his home on Sunday. He was 88.
A statement from the Gibbs family said: ‘It is with great sadness that we inform you that Stephen Gibbs died on Sunday morning (November 12) at home. A service of thanksgiving will be held at 11.45am, Monday November 27 at Shiskine Church.’
Stephen Cokayne Gibbs was born on 18 July 1929, the son of Sir Geoffrey Cokayne Gibbs and Helen Margaret Leslie. He was educated at Eton College, Windsor and gained the rank of lieutenant in 1948 in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps. He later reached the rank of major in 1960 in the QVR (Territorial Army).
He married Lavinia Winifred Bacon, daughter of Sir Edmund Castell Bacon and Priscilla Dora Ponsonby, on 21 November 1972. The couple acquired the 27,000-acre sporting estate on Arran the same year and it was to be their home for the next 35 years. Stephen was also a former director of Charles Barker plc and the Vaux Group plc.
He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list in 2001 for his services to deer management.
He is survived by his wife Lavinia and their three children Emily, James and William.

Went to Australia with her parents living first in Melbourne and then in Perth where she attended The Presbyterian Ladies College. She returned to England when she was 12 and finished her education at Heathfield School and also in Paris. In 1932 her mother and stepfather moved to Dominica in the West Indies and she went with them, living there for the rest of her life. She marired Percy Kirwan Agar a farmer and well known painter and ornithologist. She ran the census office in the War. After husband’s death in 1954 she continued to run the estate, started the local radio station, worked for many local charities including the Red Cross and was a founder member and Managing director of the Fort Young Hotel for many years.

The Fort Young Hotel, Dominica, which was destroyed by Hurricane 'David' when it hit Dominica in August 1979, but since rebuilt. She also helped to run the Coulibri Estate dairy farm, and the farm at La Haut, the family estate, that was also totally wrecked in the hurricane; all the buildings on the dairy farm fell down, but only one cow was lost.

Last address: Morne Rouge, Dominica, West Indies, which was one of the few houses not destroyed by the hurricane.
