- He was given the name of Alexander Cumming at birth. He was commissioned in 1794 with the rank of officer, in the service of the 13th Regiment. His name was legally changed to Alexander Gordon-Cumming under the terms of the will of Sir William Gordon of Gordonstoun, 1st Bt. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Strathspey Fencibles. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Inverness Burghs.
He suppressed a mutiny at Dumfries. He was created 1st Baronet Gordon-Cumming, of Altyre and of Gordonstoun, co. Moray on 21 May 1804. He lived at Altyre, Morayshire, Scotland. He lived at Gordonstoun, Scotland
