The Bright family bought a substantial property called Ashfield House, a house and pastures then in semi rural Lancashire originally bought and built on by James Clemens in the 1770s. Clemens was Lord Mayor of Liverpool in 1775. The house became available for sale after the death of Alice Clarke in 1858. Clarke was a widow on the death of her husband John Clarke a Liverpool.merchant in 1829.the ashfield house estate was substantial consisting of over 40 acres of pasture. The grounds had a gatehouse and a separate cottage with stabling for several horses. Also included was an orchard, a walled garden and two kitchen gardens. Most of the lands were sold for housing development in the 1920s. The gate house is now a private dwelling and the stable block / cottages were renovated into 7 apartments about 20 years ago. The main house was demolished after an arson attack in 2003 and the grounds still remain as a community hub run by a charity. The whole estate is now part of the Broadgreen, Knotty Ash suburban area about 5 miles.from Liverpool city centre. |
