North Somerset Yeomanry January 1915; lost a leg as the result of wounds at the 2nd battle of Ypres May 1915, and was invalided out of the Army December 1916. From 1921 farming at Great Hidden Farm, Hungerford.

    Charles Edward Hogg came to Enland in 1893 and in the 1911 census he was a Civil Engineer (own account) living with Beachamp Ferdinand and his new wife Rosalie Alice Barnett born 30th Nov 1884 London and died March 1965 Newbury Berkshire
    They married 1903 and had a son Audley Alltrees Hogg born 20th Dec 1904 London and died 21st Feb 1936 at sea  He was a Lt Commander RN on HMS Remillies (he was found dead in his cabin) aged 32
    Rosalie Alice Hogg (nee Barnett) remarried 1922 Kensington London to Armar D Saunderson boen 1st May 1872 and died 1952 Newbury Berkshire aged 80  He was a Farmer

Baptised at a church in the parish of Paddington 10 May 1861. Educated at Wellington College 1875-80; matric at Oxford (Keble College) October 1880; 1st Class Modern History and BA 1883; MA 1887; Hon. LL.D Glasgow University 1931. Cremated at Oxford.

    At Wellington was Head of School and Queen's Medallist. History lecturer and tutor of Keble College, Oxford, 1884-99. Professor of History at Glasgow 1899-1931. Sometime Chairman of the Appointments Committee of Glasgow University, a Member of Glasgow School Board, an examiner for the Scottish Education Department, for the Oxford and Cambridge University Examination Board, and for the Civil Service Commissioners. Sometime Honours History Examiner for Oxford, Cambridge, Belfast, Birmingham and Sheffield Universities, now (1932) for Glasgow, Sheffield, and Durham. Member representing Glasgow University in Glasgow Territorial Army and Air Force Association 1908-31. Chairman of the Military Education Committee (Officers' Training Corps) 1909-31. Chairman of Central Organisation Military Education Committee (Senior Divisional O.T.C.) 1923- 31. In the Great War one of the Young Men's Christian Association's lecturers to the Army in France, and (1918-19) sub Director at Trouville, later at Havre, under the Army Scheme of Education: awarded British War medal. Author of A Student's Manual of English Constitutional History published 1894 (6th edition 1925) and other works (see Who's Who 1930). He and his wife lived at Oxford 1890-1900: at Glasgow 1900-31 (45 Lilybank Gardens from 1919). Vacation houses: The Manor House, Mears Ashby, Northants 1908-15; and successively 1915-28 at Bradfield, Greenham, and Highclere, all in Berks, and, from 1928-34, at Hill House, Heckfield, Hants, to which he retired on resigning his Professorship. Thereafter, lived at Ashby, Tydesham, Newbury, until his death.

    8th son of George Henry Gibbs of London. Baptised 26 May 1832 at St.-Giles-in-the-Fields, Holborn. Educated at Eton College 1834-35 and Charterhouse, London, 1846-7. Matric at Oxford (Exeter College), 24 Oct. 1849, BA, a 'grand compounder, MA, 1856. Buried 15 January 1914 at Speen. Will proved 17 February 1914.

    To add to the facts about education, he went to a school at Brighton about six or seven, and then to one at Clifton, Bristol. After Charterhouse he was, 1848-9, with a tutor, the rector of Poundstock, Cornwall. Joined Antony Gibbs & Sons, London, 1854, but left them 1856 through ill-health, and in every year 1851 to 58 he travelled much abroad, particularly in Spain, and (1857-8) up the Nile and in Palestine. A student at Wells Theological College 1858. Ordained Deacon (Exeter) 1859, Priest 1860. Curate at St. Mary's, Torwood, Torquay, to Rev. J. Hogg 1859-1860, when his health drove him abroad again (Pyrenees) with his wife and first-born. Living at Bradeham, Bucks., 1863-4. Perpetual Curate of Clifton Hampden, Oxon., 1864 (presented by his brother Henry Hucks Gibbs), but resigned work in 1874 from the same cause as before. His parsonage there was what is now the Manor House. Resided at Oaklands, Cleveland, Somerset, 1874-8. Vicar of Exwick, Devon, 1878-85; Rector of Clyst St. George, Devon 1885-97 (presented to both by Antony Gibbs). Retired and resided at Speen House, Berks., 1898-1914. Editor of 'The Registers of Clyst St. George', published 1899 by The Parish Register Society. Member of the Athenauem Club, London, 1863-86. His diaries 1851-1912 (52 vols.), last in possession of John Arthur Gibbs in 1932 are now missing. The volume of his 'Reminiscences' (MS.) from c.1840 to 1910, now in the possession of Denis D. Gibbs.

    2nd daughter of Robert Bright (died 1869) of Abbots Leigh, Somerset (partner of George Gibbs), for whose lineage see Bright of Colwall in Burke's 'Landed Gentry', by Caroline (died 1843); 4th and youngest daughter of Thomas Tyndall of The Royal Fort, Bristol. Baptised at Abbots Leigh 3 January 1860. Was buried at Speen House 24 March 1920. Administration May 1920.

    Her Tyndall grandmother was Marianne (died 1805), daughter of Lambert Schimmelpennick of Bristol (of the family of the Dutch Counts of that name) and sister-in-law of Mary Anne Schimmelpennick, the authoress, whose life is in the Dictionary of National Biography. For the Tyndall family see articles by Greenfield in The Genealogist Magazine Vol II (1878). Her diaries 1851 to 1920 (53 volumes) were in possession of John Arthur Gibbs in 1932, now missing.
