Sometime manager of the Eastern Telegraph Co. in Egpyt. The last in the male line of descendants of Captain John Gibbs of Topsham.

John married Marian Ballard on 26 Jun 1858 in Westminster, London. Marian (daughter of John Ballard and Louisa Ballard) was born about 1842 in Berkshire; died on 15 Mar 1878 in Alexandria, Egypt. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

2nd son, sometime of Genoa, later of Manchester. Merchant. Born 15 June 1793, baptised at St. Augustine's Bristol, educated at Blundell's aforesaid 1804-8. Died at Manchester 8 November 1837, buried at Blackley there. Will dated 3 November 1837.

John married Ellin Maria Gamble on 15 Nov 1828 in Finsbury, Middlesex. Ellin (daughter of John Richard Gamble and Elizabeth Devis) was born on 2 Nov 1807 in Paxton, Huntingdonshire; died on 27 Nov 1835 in Genoa, Genova, Liguria, Italy; was buried on 29 Nov 1835 in Genoa, Genova, Liguria, Italy. Daughter of John Richard Gamble of Finsbury Square, London, merchant. Born 2 November 1807, baptised at Paxxton, Huntingdonshire, married 15 November 1828 at St. Luke's Finsbury, died 27th and buried 29 November 1835 at Genoa.

Officer in the Navy, baptised at Topsham 19 June 1757. Died 1830 and buried there.

His home after marriage was in Shapter Street., Topsham, but a different house to his father's. He and his brother John and their father are described as 'mariners' in a deed of 1788 ('Aldenham Genealogical Collections, p. 165) and he and his brothers John and Thomas in the deed of 1789 referred to below under Lieutenant George Gibbs. He certainly was a trading ship-captain, but the evidence is missing on which (following the old editions) he is described in the chart as an officer in the navy. His death in 1830 ended the family connection of five generations with Topsham.

William married Susanna Ley. Susanna (daughter of Thomas Ley, Rev) was born in 1766; died on 3 May 1834. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Daughter of Rev. Thomas Ley of Doddiscombe Leigh, Devon, baptised there 2 December 1766. Married at Topsham 12 August 1790, died 3 May 1834. Will in the Principal Registry of the Bishop of Exeter.

Her brother Rev. John Ley was 'usher' of Bllundell's School, Tiverton. She had a sister married to ... Edwards, a london stockbroker, whose grandson was Major Sir Fleetwood J. Edwards, K.C.B., R.E. On her husband's death she removed from Topsham to Toverton with her daughters.

John married Elizabeth Devis on 5 May 1803 in Spitalfields Christ Church, Stepney, London. Elizabeth was born on 25 Nov 1776. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

His home after marriage was in Shapter Street, Topsham. Will proved by Elizabeth his widow; George Abraham Gibbs and Antony Gibbs certify. Party to a deed with his wife, her neice Elizabeth Roper, and Nathaniel George Petre, 11 December 1765.

John married Elizabeth Meachin on 13 Jan 1751/52. Elizabeth (daughter of William Meachin and Elizabeth Bury) was born before 1731; died in 1779. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Younger daughter and husband of William Meachin by Elizabeth, daughter of .... Bury. Will dated 29 October 1778, proved 28 July 1779 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, Doctors Commons, London.

For the Meachin family and pedigree see 'Aldenham Genealogical Collections', Vol. A, p. 439 and Vol. CI. p. 427. Her portrait was supposed to be in a picture bought by Lord Aldenham in 1912 (by Sir Godfrey Kneller) of three children, which was labelled 'Mary, Elizabeth, and William, children of William Meachin', but, as she is only known to have had sisters Catherine and Margaret, and no brother is recorded, the identity is doubtful. Her will was proved by George Abraham Gibbs and William Gibbs; power reserved to John her eldest son.
