    While he was Dean of Cape Town, building works were started to complete the south side of the cathedral and nave. These were finished in 1963.
    Much of his time was devoted to spiritual counsel and direction, individually, through retreats, and helping others in need.

    Interests: Fishing, acting, singing, walking, and as a young man, shooting. He was a very good shot, trained by Charlie Woodley, his Cousin Alban's (keeper at Clifton Hampden. A very good tennis player.

    Memorials: Window in the north wall of Cape Town Cathedral; Memorial in the chapel of Ranche House College, Salisbury, Rhodesia, where his son John Michael was the first principal.     1st daughter of John Spencer Ward of Long Wittenham, Berks., by Beatrix, daughter of Rev Sir Charles Gordon Cumming Dunbar, 8th Baronet of Northfield, Co. Elgin. Educated at 'The Bonhams', St. Leonards, Sussex; Aldburgh, and Oxford University (Home Student in Medicine). Memorial in Chester Cathedral.

    Before her marriage she studied medicine at Oxford University as a home student, travelling into lectures on a motorcycle. During this time she was also nursing her mother. After 4 years as a medical student she caught scarlet fever and was unable to take her exam in 1923, and then married before her finals. During the whole of her married life she was a constant support and companion to her husband, assisting in parish work and later on, fully involved in all the commitments that fall to a Dean's wife both in Cape Town and Chester.

    The year she died she visited Africa for the last time to see her two daughters and their husbands—Mary and Maurice in Malawi and Bridget and John in Lesotho.

    Interests: Unfailing interest in people and a great encourager.

    A home-maker of unbounded hospitality, the Rectory and Deanery were open to all. In later life she enjoyed sketching.

    To add to the facts about education, he went to a school at Brighton about six or seven, and then to one at Clifton, Bristol. After Charterhouse he was, 1848-9, with a tutor, the rector of Poundstock, Cornwall. Joined Antony Gibbs & Sons, London, 1854, but left them 1856 through ill-health, and in every year 1851 to 58 he travelled much abroad, particularly in Spain, and (1857-8) up the Nile and in Palestine. A student at Wells Theological College 1858. Ordained Deacon (Exeter) 1859, Priest 1860. Curate at St. Mary's, Torwood, Torquay, to Rev. J. Hogg 1859-1860, when his health drove him abroad again (Pyrenees) with his wife and first-born. Living at Bradeham, Bucks., 1863-4. Perpetual Curate of Clifton Hampden, Oxon., 1864 (presented by his brother Henry Hucks Gibbs), but resigned work in 1874 from the same cause as before. His parsonage there was what is now the Manor House. Resided at Oaklands, Cleveland, Somerset, 1874-8. Vicar of Exwick, Devon, 1878-85; Rector of Clyst St. George, Devon 1885-97 (presented to both by Antony Gibbs). Retired and resided at Speen House, Berks., 1898-1914.     Her Tyndall grandmother was Marianne (died 1805), daughter of Lambert Schimmelpennick of Bristol (of the family of the Dutch Counts of that name) and sister-in-law of Mary Anne Schimmelpennick, the authoress, whose life is in the Dictionary of National Biography. For the Tyndall family see articles by Greenfield in The Genealogist Magazine Vol II (1878). Her diaries 1851 to 1920 (53 volumes) were in possession of John Arthur Gibbs in 1932, now missing.

    Charles Gordon-Cumming-Dunbar, DD (b Elgin 14 February 1844 - d Ramsgate 8 January 1916) was an Anglican priest in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

    He was educated at Winchester College and the University of Jena; and ordained in 1867. His first post was as Chaplain to the Bishop of Colombo. After that he refused the chance to be the first Bishop of Pretoria but accepted the Archdeaconry of Grenada, serving from 1875 to 1877. On his return he held incumbencies at Little Heath and Walthamstow.

    On 17 October 1872 he married Edith Wentworth (1845–1891), youngest daughter of William Charles Wentworth. He had one daughter Beatrix Leyla Marjorie Wentworth who died on 8 January 1919, leaving issue.
